More and more people use mobile gadgets to access web content, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is steadily growing. To meet this demand, the entity that manages the universal top-level domain extensions, ICANN, introduced the dot MOBI domain name extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the intention behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it should comply with certain rules. In other words, all .MOBI websites need to be created to be viewed flawlessly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the dot MOBI Registry. These incorporate how a site is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.
The restrictions have induced some questions in view of the fact that the universal top-level domain is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to access a website and the way in which this must happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be created in such a way as to be accessed by most web browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
Since the dot MOBI Registry organization does not sell domains directly, you can reserve a .MOBI domain with any 3rd-party provider, such as ours. If you have an already active domain, you can also move it over to our company if you obtain its EPP key from your present registrar company.
